Company Labels and Metadata

Organize companies with color-coded labels, label groups, and custom metadata fields.

Labels and metadata let you categorize and annotate your portfolio companies with organization-specific information. Labels provide quick visual classification, while metadata fields capture structured data you can display as portfolio columns.

Labels

Labels are color-coded tags you assign to companies for easy categorization and filtering.

Managing Labels

Navigate to Organization Settings > Company Labels to manage your labels.

Creating a Label

  1. Click Create Label.
  2. Enter a label name (maximum 25 characters).
  3. Choose a color from the available palette.
  4. Optionally add a description (maximum 255 characters).
  5. Click Create Label to save.
To create a label within a group, use the "Group/Label" naming syntax. For example, entering Stage/Seed creates a label named "Seed" in the group "Stage". If the group does not exist, it is created automatically.

Editing a Label

Labels support inline editing directly in the labels table:

  • Click on a label name or description cell to edit it in place.
  • Change the label color using the color picker in the table row.
  • Press Enter or click outside to save your changes.

Archiving and Unarchiving Labels

  • Click the menu on a label row and select Archive to archive a label.
  • Archived labels are hidden from the label list by default.
  • Toggle Show Archived to see archived labels.
  • Click Unarchive on an archived label to restore it.

Archiving a label does not remove it from companies it is already assigned to, but it prevents new assignments.

Deleting Labels

  • Click the menu on a label row and select Delete.
  • Confirm the deletion in the dialog.
  • Deleting a label permanently removes it and unassigns it from all companies.

Bulk Actions

Select multiple labels using the checkboxes, then:

  • Bulk Archive -- archive all selected labels at once.
  • Bulk Delete -- permanently delete all selected labels.

Label Table

The labels management page displays a table with:

  • Name -- the label name with its assigned color.
  • Description -- optional description text.
  • Group -- the label group name, if assigned.
  • Companies -- the number of companies currently assigned this label. Click the count to navigate to the portfolio filtered by that label.

Assigning Labels to Companies

Labels are assigned to companies on the company edit page. Select labels from the available list during company creation or editing. See Managing Companies for details.

Filtering by Labels

In the portfolio dashboard, use the advanced filters to filter by labels or label groups. See Portfolio Dashboard and Views for details.

Custom Metadata

Custom metadata fields let you define organization-specific data points that appear as columns in the portfolio table, on company forms, and in filters.

Managing Metadata Fields

Navigate to Organization Settings > Company Metadata to manage your metadata definitions.

Creating a Metadata Field

  1. Click Add Field.
  2. Fill in the field details:
    • Label -- the display name for the field.
    • Slug -- auto-generated from the label; used as the internal identifier.
    • Type -- choose from: Text, Number, Date, Checkbox, Select, Multi Select, or Combobox.
    • Helper Text (optional) -- brief instructions displayed to users filling in the field.
    • Required -- toggle whether the field is mandatory.
  3. For Select, Multi Select, and Combobox types, define the available options.
  4. For Number types, configure the number format (decimal places, prefix/suffix, etc.).
  5. Click Create to save.

A live preview shows how the field will appear in the portfolio table as you configure it.

Editing a Metadata Field

  1. Click Edit on the field card.
  2. Update the label, helper text, required status, or options.
  3. The field type cannot be changed after creation.
  4. Click Save to apply changes.

Reordering Metadata Fields

Drag and drop field cards on the Active tab to reorder them. The order determines the display sequence in forms and the portfolio table. Changes are saved automatically.

Archiving and Restoring Fields

  • Click the archive icon on a field card to archive it.
  • Archived fields move to the Archived tab.
  • Click Restore on an archived field to make it active again.

Archiving a field hides it from forms and new column selections, but preserves existing data.

Permanently Deleting Fields

  1. Navigate to the Archived tab.
  2. Click Delete on the archived field.
  3. Confirm the deletion.

Permanent deletion removes the field definition and all associated data. This action cannot be undone.

Assigning Metadata Values

Metadata values are set per company on the company create and edit pages. A "Metadata" section appears below the standard company fields if your organization has defined any metadata fields.

Metadata as Portfolio Columns

Custom metadata fields automatically become available as columns in the portfolio dashboard. Enable them through column customization to display metadata values alongside financial data. You can also filter by metadata fields using the advanced filter controls.
